What is a perianal (anal) abscess?
A perianal abscess is a condition wherein the cavity in the anus is filled with pus. It is also known by the terms ‘rectal abscess’ and ‘anal abscess’. Most anal abscesses are the consequence of disease from little anal glands.
In some cases, the rectal abscess results in painful anal fistulas. If the pus is not drained, it may lead to a lot of pain and even require surgery. Surgical incision and seepage is the most well-known and effective treatment for a wide range of perianal abscesses.
What are the symptoms of a perianal abscess?
The Perianal abscess symptoms are:
- Discharge of pus
- Throbbing or dull pain while in a seating position
- Constipation or pain related to solid discharges
- Tenderness in the skin around the anus
- Rectal Bleeding
- Fatigue
- Fever
What causes a perianal abscess?
A perianal abscess is caused by:
- Contamination by sexually transmitted infection (STI)
- Anal Intercourse
- Blocked anal glands
- Infection from an anal fissure
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Smoking
What is the treatment for a perianal abscess?
Treatment for a perianal abscess is recommended in two ways:
- Treatment for Perianal Abscess Without Surgery – Perianal abscess treatment at home can be done with the help of warm water soaks with each bowel movement. It can also be performed at least 2-3 times a day. The pus will heal on its own without the need for any other treatment.
- Treatment for Perianal Abscess With Surgery – When the abscess is perianal, it can be treated with surgery. A small incision is made over the infected area to drain the pus. The recovery time for a perianal abscess surgery is around 1-2 days. Most of the cases heal completely after 3-4 weeks.
